Soccer is not just a game; it's a journey of growth, resilience, and teamwork for young players. As parents, your role in supporting and guiding your child through their soccer endeavors is crucial. Whether your child is playing at a recreational, performance, or top sports level, the values instilled through soccer coaching can shape their character and enhance their overall development.

As the Head of Academy at Pelota, a technical soccer training institution committed to developing the skills of young talents, I understand the aspirations and dreams you hold for your child in the realm of soccer.

With over 15 years of experience in soccer talent development, I've had the privilege to meet and speak with many soccer parents. I've heard about the wonderful success stories of their talented children, but I've also listened to the issues parents face with their children within the world of youth soccer. It ranges from minor issues like their child not playing in the right position on the field to concerning problems where the child/the player themselves indicate they no longer enjoy the game of soccer. And then there are children who play at a professional club and have always dreamed of being scouted and becoming professional soccer players.

At Pelota Academy, we provide advice and tips to parents based on our expertise to address their concerns.

Today, I want to share my Top 10 of important insights and tips that can empower you to be the best coaching parent for your aspiring soccer child.

  1. Encourage a Love for the Game: At Pelota, we believe passion fuels excellence. Foster a genuine love for soccer in your child by exposing them to matches, discussing games, and encouraging recreational play. Let them enjoy the game's essence beyond structured training sessions.
  2. Emphasize Skill Development Over Winning: While victories are also important, prioritize skill enhancement and character development. Teach them that improvement comes from perseverance, practice, and learning from both victories and defeats.
  3. Support Without Pressure: Avoid placing unnecessary pressure on your child to perform. Offer unconditional support and encouragement. Allow them to explore and enjoy the game without feeling overwhelmed by expectations.
  4. Balancing Academics and Soccer: Education is vital. Help your child strike a balance between academics and soccer. Instill discipline in managing time effectively for both pursuits.
  5. Invest in Proper Equipment: Ensure your child has suitable gear and equipment, including comfortable footwear, shin guards, and a properly sized soccer ball. This ensures safety and optimal performance.
  6. Healthy Lifestyle: Nutrition and fitness are cornerstones of athletic performance. Encourage a balanced diet and regular exercise to fuel their energy levels and sustain peak performance.
  7. Mental Resilience: Soccer is as much a mental game as it is physical. Teach your child to embrace challenges, handle setbacks, and maintain a positive attitude. Mental resilience is a crucial asset on the field.
  8. Be a Role Model: Demonstrate sportsmanship and respect for the game. Your behavior shapes your child's perspective. Emphasize fair play, respect for opponents, coaches, and referees.
  9. Effective Communication: Listen to your child's experiences, concerns, and aspirations. Effective communication fosters trust and understanding, crucial for their overall development.
  10. Find Quality Coaching: Seek high quality coaching programs like Pelota’s virtual training course that prioritize skill development, sportsmanship, and holistic growth. A professional coach will enrich your guidance and offer specialized knowledge and training methods.

There are also differences in how you need to coach your child at various levels of play, ranging from recreational to high potential, which demand distinct approaches tailored to the specific needs and aspirations of young athletes.

Coaching at different levels.

1. Recreational Level
When coaching your child at the recreational level, the main goal is to foster their love for the game. As a parent-coach, your focus should be on creating a fun and secure space where kids can freely explore soccer without feeling pressured by high competition. Prioritize teaching fundamental skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship in your coaching approach. Rather than directing, your role involves facilitating their experience, encouraging active participation, and offering guidance to ensure they enjoy the sport while grasping its basics. Remember, the aim here isn't solely skill development; it's about cultivating a positive experience that motivates your child to stay engaged with soccer for the long term.

2. Performance Level
As your child progresses to the performance level, as a parent-coach, your approach becomes more structured and competitive. At this stage, your child is eager to enhance their skills and performance. To support this growth, focus your coaching on more concentrated training sessions that highlight technical abilities, tactical understanding, and physical fitness. Work closely with your child on refining their individual skills while also emphasizing the importance of teamwork and strategy. Help them grasp different game scenarios, improve decision-making skills, and prepare them for competitive matches. The goal here is to nurture a well-rounded player capable of thriving in organized leagues or tournaments.

3. High-potential Level
At the high potential level, it demands a specialized and intensive approach. As a parent-coach, recognize that your young athlete might display exceptional talent and dedication, with aspirations for higher levels of competition or even pursuing a professional path. At this stage, training needs to become more personalized, focusing on specific areas for improvement based on your child's strengths and weaknesses. Concentrate on advanced techniques, mental readiness, and enhancing game intelligence. The ultimate goal isn't just refining technical skills but also preparing your child for the demands and challenges they'll encounter in elite-level soccer.

Whether your child plays at recreational, performance or high-potential level, the quality of development remains measurable through the individual growth of each talent. Keep the priority on developing growth while also guaranteeing a high level of enjoyment and fun in training sessions, matches, and even casual street play. Improving at soccer and having a ton of fun go hand in hand, no matter where you are in your soccer journey.

So each level demands a unique coaching philosophy and methodology tailored to the developmental stage and aspirations of the young players. Understanding these differences helps coaches, parents, and players align their expectations and goals, ensuring a more effective and fulfilling soccer experience at every level.

Coaching development as your child grows up.

As a child progresses through different age groups, their needs and developmental requirements in soccer evolve significantly. Here's a breakdown of how parental coaching can adapt to meet these changing needs:

U6 / U12
For players between the ages of 6 and 12, the focus should revolve around aiding their learning process in skill development. As a parent-coach, your role is crucial in providing the right information and guidance to help them grasp the fundamentals of soccer. As Arsene Wenger said: ’First becomes the base of technique. You get that between seven and fourteen years of age. If you have no technical skill at fourteen, you can forget it, you can never be a football player’ . So encourage exploration, fun, and advanced skill acquisition during this phase. Offer clear instructions and demonstrations to assist them in understanding the game's essential techniques and rules. It's about laying a strong foundation and fostering a love for the sport.

U13 / U16
During the ages of 13 to 16, young players need coaching and constant encouragement in their development. As a parent-coach, your role shifts towards providing more structured coaching sessions that focus on refining skills, tactical understanding, specific positional tasks and mental fortitude. Offer constructive feedback and mentorship to help them navigate the challenges they might face on and off the field. Encourage perseverance, dedication, and a growth mindset. Your support at this stage significantly influences their progress and confidence in the sport.

U16+
As players reach the age of 16, 17 and beyond, they begin to require more autonomy and independence in their soccer journey. How much does your child want to be successful? At this stage, your role as a parent-coach transitions to supporting them in making their own choices and decisions regarding their soccer path. Encourage them to take ownership of their training, set goals, and make informed decisions about their aspirations in the sport. Offer guidance when needed but allow them the space to explore their options, whether it's pursuing recreational play, higher levels of competition, considering college soccer, or exploring for professional opportunities.

As a parent, your involvement in your child's soccer journey evolves alongside their needs as they grow older. Adapting your coaching approach to meet these varying developmental stages is essential in providing the right support and guidance at each phase of their soccer development. Ultimately, your guidance, encouragement, and understanding play a pivotal role in nurturing their passion and growth in the beautiful game of soccer.

Each child's journey in soccer is unique. Celebrate their progress, however small, and keep the focus on their enjoyment and growth in the sport. Together, we can nurture their passion for soccer while cultivating values that extend far beyond the field.
